Analysis | 2024–2025 source review

Deep research AI: audit claims, not citation counts

This analysis is published on 25 October 2026 and examines the original 2025-02-02 announcement or report. It is not a claim of a launch this week or a current availability guide. Use a claim-to-source evidence ledger and allocate human review according to the consequence of an error.

What the original release promised

OpenAI launched deep research on 2 February 2025 as a capability for multi-step internet research and synthesis. The announcement described reports with citations and the ability to interpret material across web pages, images and PDFs. That launch is the historical basis here; later updates on the same page are not silently treated as original features. 1

The distinction matters because a citation-bearing report is an inspectable output, not a verified conclusion. Search, extraction and synthesis each introduce separate opportunities for error. Business adoption should improve the review process rather than simply produce longer documents.

Specify the evidence question first

A request to “research the market” leaves geography, period and decision criteria undefined. Ask a narrower question, such as which documented requirements affect a named procurement decision within a defined jurisdiction. Specify the cutoff date and distinguish current obligations from announced proposals. This reduces the risk of mixing incompatible facts into one confident summary.

Require the report to separate observed facts, publisher claims and analyst inference. AI search covers discovery behavior; this article’s concern is whether the discovered material can support a specific decision after its context has been checked.

Build a claim-to-source ledger

For each decision-critical claim, record the exact statement, original publisher, publication date, relevant passage and reviewer status. A link at the end of a long paragraph may support only one sentence. Break compound claims apart so numerical values, scope and causal interpretation can be checked independently.

Prefer original filings, standards, official statistics and dated product announcements for their respective factual domains. A vendor can verify what it announced, not independently establish market-wide productivity. Repeated articles quoting the same press release are one evidence chain, not multiple independent confirmations.

Check denominators and dates

A percentage without its population can be misleading even if the quoted number is accurate. Verify the sample, period, geography and definition of the measured outcome. Watch for forecasts rewritten as observations and launch-day availability described as current availability. Publication and update dates may refer to different parts of a page.

If a source is blocked or unavailable, mark the claim unverified rather than filling the gap with a plausible paraphrase. Company knowledge adds the internal-information dimension: internal documents also need ownership, dates and version control before they become evidence.

Review according to consequence

Not every sentence needs the same level of scrutiny. A background description may tolerate a quick spot check; a regulatory obligation, investment assumption or medical statement needs deeper verification by the appropriate specialist. Define that allocation before reading a polished report, whose fluency can otherwise influence what reviewers decide to question.

Use contradictory evidence deliberately. Ask what would weaken the conclusion and whether the search included that possibility. AI security covers governance more broadly, while the research-specific control is traceability from the decision back to the evidence that could change it.

Measure verified throughput

Assess how many decision-relevant claims can be accepted per reviewer hour, not how many pages the tool generates. Track broken references, unsupported assertions and time spent locating original material. Compare against the existing research process using the same question and acceptance criteria. A fast first draft can still create a slow final review.

Keep the final evidence ledger alongside the approved report and record unresolved limitations. Advisory can help establish a pilot. Deep research’s durable value is accelerating discovery and synthesis while making verification more systematic, not eliminating the obligation to check the underlying sources.

THE TAKEAWAY

Decision rule: Use a claim-to-source evidence ledger and allocate human review according to the consequence of an error.
