AI search changes the route to your customer

Google announced AI Mode’s US rollout in May 2025. The continuing business question is how to help customers understand your offer when their journey begins with a conversation rather than a list of links.

The verified product shift

On 20 May 2025, Google announced that AI Mode would roll out in the United States without requiring a Search Labs signup. Google described a search experience supporting complex questions, follow-ups, multimodal input and links to the web. This is the original announcement date, not a claim of a new October 2026 launch.

The announcement demonstrates a change in the discovery interface. It does not, by itself, prove that your business has lost traffic or that every customer now uses AI search. Those are measurement questions that require your own evidence.

What AI search means for a business website

A customer may ask a layered question: which service fits a specific company, what the trade-offs are, and what to do next. Content that answers only a broad slogan gives little material for that decision. Explain what you offer, who it is for, where it applies and what the customer should expect.

Google’s Search Central guidance says established SEO practices remain relevant to its AI features; there is no special AI markup requirement. Clear, accessible text and accurate structured data are useful foundations, but no format can guarantee that an AI answer will mention or recommend your business.

Improve the answer, not the keyword count

Give each page a distinct job. A service page should explain the offer; a case page should provide evidence; an article should interpret a development and answer its practical questions. Repeating the same keyword on all three does not create three useful answers.

For example, the Coop case contains concrete retail experience, while AI shopping agents examines a different issue: agents acting on a customer’s behalf. Link those when the reader needs the connection, instead of turning every paragraph into a sales pitch.

Keep names, services and factual descriptions consistent across languages. A Swedish page should answer Swedish readers naturally, not reproduce an English keyword list word for word. The Videos catalogue offers supporting talks and conversations, but important answers should also exist in readable page text.

Measure discovery and business outcomes

Use Search Console to monitor queries, impressions and clicks, while checking the actual destination pages and conversion paths. A change in traffic does not automatically identify AI search as the cause: seasonality, competitors, rankings and content changes can also matter.

Connect visibility with qualified inquiries rather than celebrating mentions alone. If more people reach an article but nobody can understand the next step, the page may need a clearer service connection. Track this over time and avoid treating a single screenshot of an AI answer as a stable ranking.

A useful first content review

Choose one real customer question and follow it through your site. Is there a direct answer, a supporting source or case, and a relevant next step? Could a reader understand the page without watching a video or opening five other tabs?

For leadership teams, the first discussion is how discovery affects the customer journey, not whether to rename SEO. AI advisory can help frame that decision, while the AI keynote provides a broader view of how interfaces and customer behaviour change.

THE TAKEAWAY

Make your offer understandable and your evidence findable. AI visibility is an outcome to measure, not a promise to buy.
