ChatGPT agent: put approval at the business commitment
This analysis is published on 25 October 2026 and examines the original 2025-07-17 announcement or report. It is not a claim of a launch this week or a current availability guide. Separate preparation from commitment, and require approval of the actual final transaction rather than the original broad instruction.

The launch joined research and action
OpenAI’s 17 July 2025 announcement combined website interaction associated with Operator, research synthesis and ChatGPT’s conversational capabilities in a virtual-computer workflow. It described navigating sites, running code and producing editable deliverables. The company said users could interrupt, take over or stop a task, with permission requested before consequential actions. 1
These are launch-era descriptions. The original page is now marked outdated, so this article does not use it as a current subscription, interface or availability guide. Its enduring business issue is the boundary between helpful preparation and authorized execution.
Translate the request into a mandate
“Arrange the meeting” can mean compare calendars, draft an invitation or send a binding message to external participants. Those are different authorities. Write the task so the permitted preparation is clear and the committing action is named. Include the intended recipients, budget or other constraints that determine whether execution is acceptable.
A broad objective is not advance approval for every later choice. Enterprise agents discusses operational adoption; the immediate requirement is a task-specific mandate that a reviewer can compare with the final proposed action without reconstructing the entire conversation.
Approve the final facts
The reviewer should see the exact recipient, message, amount or file about to leave the organization. If the agent’s proposal changes after approval, reassess whether the approval still applies. A confirmation obtained before the destination or price is known cannot meaningfully cover the final transaction.
For a client briefing, allow public research and a draft deck while reserving external sending for a named employee. This creates a useful intermediate output even when autonomy is limited. Company knowledge adds the connected-information perspective, but access to internal context must not itself confer authority to distribute it.
Keep login separate from delegation
An authenticated browser session can expose far more than the requested task requires. Logging in to one application should not be interpreted as authorizing all available actions. Prefer accounts and environments whose permissions match the pilot. Check what becomes accessible after login, including unrelated folders, mailing lists or administrative controls.
The wider policy belongs in agent safety. At task level, record which systems are in scope and when the user must take over. Do not place passwords in task instructions or assume that a confirmation dialog alone prevents misuse of an overprivileged session.
Design the takeover package
When a task pauses, the human needs the last verified state, outstanding decision and consequences of continuing. An unstructured transcript may be too slow to inspect. Ask for a compact handover showing completed preparation, pending actions and uncertainty. Confirm consequential outcomes in the business system rather than relying only on the assistant’s final narrative.
Test a rejected approval, expired login and interruption immediately before submission. The system should neither silently continue nor duplicate an action during recovery. These are recommended acceptance scenarios, not a claim about guaranteed product behavior in all circumstances.
Measure supervision as real work
Evaluate accepted deliverables, correction time and reviewer attention alongside runtime. A completed spreadsheet can still be wrong; a successful approval interaction can still consume more effort than manual execution. Compare the same cases with an ordinary assistant workflow that prepares material but cannot act.
A pilot should establish whether agentic execution adds value beyond better drafting. Keep an accountable process owner and a documented stopping rule. Advisory can support the evaluation design. The useful lesson from July 2025 is a new preparation-to-action continuum, not permission to remove people from every consequential decision.
THE TAKEAWAY
Decision rule: Separate preparation from commitment, and require approval of the actual final transaction rather than the original broad instruction.
